How it all started...
The Outer West Market Church of Christ History:
In January 1967 the Church of Christ was established. Floyd & Pauline Richards and Palmer & Blanche Brashear met in their homes and held services there. Roy Norville of the Hutsonville Christian Church helped with the move to a building on Main Street to establish a church. The congregation rallied and purchased pews and a pulpit from another church.
Some of the first members were Tom & Betty Woodward, Gerald & Ruth Maddox, Robert and Mary Jo Watson, Roger & Irene Weger, Don & Pat Brashear, Max & Lucy Carver, Bobbie Ramsey, Palmer & Blanche Brashear and the Sieglers.
In 1969 the church bought 3.33 acres for $4,000.00 which was paid for in 1971. Ground breaking was July 1969. The church basement was started in 1970. Building cost was $18,097.42 which was paid in August 1976.
January 3, 1982 the church name was changed to Outer West Market Church of Christ from the Bible Christian Church. Ministers that have served in the church are as follows: Roy Norval, Paul French, Neil Whittaker, Steve Weathers, Larry Provines, Melvin McCord, Mark Graybiel and John Brand. John has currently served the church for 23 years.
Due to increase in attendance and activities, the church decided to add a larger auditorium measuring 80 ft x 126 ft. In 1997 the church was under construction for this new, larger auditorium. On May 9, 1997 the partially completed structure collapsed injuring Deward Groves, Foy Lee White and Eric Rudd.
Since the completion of the new auditorium there have been other financial projects. Carpet for the large auditorium was purchased. A new kitchen was also added with new cabinets and appliances. In 2009 another lot was purchased behind the church.
The previous church is now the fellowship hall and many activities are held there.
At Outer West Market Church of Christ we participate fully with heart and mind. A key part of the worship is the “Preaching”, and each week “the Lord’s Supper” is offered to the body of Christians. There are many activities in the church: Bible Study, Kids for Christ Youth, Junior & Senior High Youth, Men’s Breakfast, Men & Ladies’ Night Out, Ladies’ Circle and more. We welcome you to visit us.
